A weird Android ‘Obtaining IP address’ Wifi issue workaround
Ever since I bought my android phone, iGalaxy (Samsung Galaxy S), it grew to hate me more and more until the beginning of this year; it had enough. Little Android finally refused to work accordingly. Until recently, I’ve been suffering of an irritating issue. But honestly, I don’t blame it for what it has done, I hate it; it’s only natural to hate back whoever hates you.
The issue that I was facing was a Wifi issue: a bug that renders the phone incapable of connecting to a specific wireless network! Yes, it would connect to other wireless networks except a specific one. Unfortunately, in my case the specific wireless network was my home wireless network. This issue is known as: Wifi obtaining IP address issue.
Note: If you are searching for a workaround, go watch the video at the end. Also, check the update section in the end of the blogpost. Comments might also help.
Symptoms
The name of the issue says it all. Android fails to obtain an IP address from a wireless router: connection attempt fails. It goes through stages in an infinite loop:
- Obtaining IP address
- disconnecting
- scanning
Here’s an animated image of the bug.
If that’s not enough for or you prefer a recording of it, here’s a video of it.
Thoughts
Such problem had brought all people to speak, the noobs and the experts, all with one aim: a bugfix. After all, what is an Android phone if it was unable to connect to a wireless network? A mere phone. However, no bugfix that I am aware of exists.
Many have accused our wireless routers for being defective. However, I refused to believe that. Partially because the very same Android device used to work properly with the same router, but mostly because executing a factory reset made the device recover the ability to connect to the very same router – for a couple of days, that is. Others have suggested to set a static IP address, which makes sense, but failed for some of us – including me. Other methods were proposed, but I, along with others, found none of them working for us.
I for one am not interested in Android at all, it’s a disgrace to the Linux family – in my personal opinion. And because of that, I stopped pursuing a solution. I gave up. Ever since January ’11, till few days ago, my phone had never been connected my home wireless network.
Workaround
Days ago, some of my siblings bought new mobile phones, Android mobile phone, Android mobile phones manufactured by Samsung, Android mobile phones manufactured by Samsung and of the Galaxy class: Samsung Galaxy Pro. Two were actually bought. The price of such a promising device was quite cheap; 48 KD per unit, quite a bargain.
About an hour after the purchase, they were running and connected to my home wireless network flawlessly. Call it jealousy, but I wanted mine to do that as well. (Update: one of them caught the bug! XD)
It was 5am when I managed to get mine connected. I was shocked, it worked! That was good news, but the sad news was that I did not know what I exactly did to get it to work; I was trying everything! I had to keep it within the wifi coverage area for almost a complete day. That’s when I managed to acknowledge the procedure I had done; it made no sense at all. The procedure was exactly like making a baby who’s refusing to cry, cry.
- Ask baby to cry> Baby refuses
- Give baby candy> Baby becomes happy
- Take candy from baby > Baby cries
Now, this is what I did:
- Turn off Wifi
- Turn on static IP option
- Turn on Wifi
- Turn off static IP option> Connection establishes
The only difference between those two situations is that there is more details to my workaround. With turning on the static IP option one had to fill in the IP address, Gateway, Netmask, and DNS fields. And apparently, they have to be valid. Now one thing that adds a ton to the WTFness is the DNS fields. Android provides two fields, if both are filled, the workaround works, if less, then it fails!
Of course this is a workaround and not a solution which means this has to be done every time one wished to connect to the same network that the little Android hates.
Now, for those who face the same issue, here’s a guiding video that might get yours working.
[Update] Other workarounds
Here are some other workarounds/solutions.
- Brandon’s workaround
I have found an easier workaround – open Allshare (I think it is a built-in app) it will prompt that you need to connect to WiFi, select your network and it will connect.
Note: For me, it would only work if I turn off the wifi before starting up the AllShare application. BTW, I still use this method.
- Mr Mobinga’s workaround
Go to Settings -> Wireless & Networks -> Wifi Settings -> Press Menu -> Advanced. Then check “Best Wi-Fi Performance”. Uncheck “Use Static IP”. Then for the most important scroll down to DLNA IP settings. Then click “Check to use DLNA when no DHCP server is available.” Magic. It works awesome.
Note: This workaround worked on Android 2.3.5 (HTC Wildfire S), so some of you might not have the mentioned options if your Android firmware is not the same or if you’re using another phone model (Like me).
- Mehul’s workaround
i Just clicked on Add Network . Wrote in my correct ssid Name and password. There’s no same issues now.. connects flawlessly ;D
So basically, all you have to do to attempt this workaround is going to your wifi settings, scroll to the bottom and press on “Add WI-FI network”. You’ll be prompted for “Network SSID” and “Security type”. These should be filled according to your wifi router/hotspot settings. Make sure you write the name correctly, and choose the correct security type. If the network is secured, you’ll be asked to enter the passcode. Once done, if you’re as lucky as Muhal, it should be connected.
Note: This workaround has been reported working on Android 4.0.3 (Samsung Galaxy Note N7000), might not work for you if you own a different device or running a different firmware. Haven’t tested it myself yet.
- Last resort
Hey, if you’re still having this issue, you can do a factory reset – it fixed mine! … Though that also means it’s gonna wipe everything, apps/contacts/files, so you have to do a backup!
Many thanks to all contributors, all who are sharing their own workarounds. :)

Hey Anxiousnut,
I tried doing this and it still doesn’t work. It just keeps saying ….obtaining IP address….remembered…. disabled…. then tries again. Any tips? I have the SGS2, btw.
Thanks

You can call your ISP and ask them for the IPs of their DNS servers, or simply use the ones I use which are owned by Google. Google has two DNS servers for the public, 8.8.4.4 and 4.4.4.4 – not 100% sure about the later IP.
AnxiousNut said this on November 8, 2011 at 1:11 AM |
What? If you cant get on the internet how in the Sam Hell are you gonna use googles dns machines you idiot prankster. Much less your ISPs DNS servers. You people basically suck stupid and swallow it. You have to use YOUR own wireless router as the gateway first and then your wireless router in your home directly plugged into the ISP’s router is going to know your ISP’s DNS servers. So, your own routers ip address and then your isp’s dns servers as the Domain named server. OR your own routers tcpip address usually 192.168.1.1 or 0.1. as all the dns tcpip addresses for the config to work.

I think I may know the cause. I recently enabled guest access on my router. This only started happening after I did this because my android is set to connect to open access points. Since I already had an IP assigned from the internal IP, and sometimes it connected to the open A and not the secured one, I think it gets confused. I turned off guest access (after doing the workaround) and hopefully that fixed it.
Joe said this on March 2, 2012 at 11:55 PM |

Found this solution on another forum which worked for me:
Go to your WiFi settings. Hit the menu button. There should be a sub-menu (its called advanced on my ROM) where one of the options is “Wi-Fi sleep policy.” Change the option to “never.”
rimrunner said this on March 5, 2012 at 4:28 AM |
No you peepoll have it all wrong here. You need to turn your little toy into a Loop Back modem or tcp/ip address by using 127.0.0.0 and 127.0.0.1 the zero addr is the gateway and the 1 is your internal tcpip command stream set. The g.d. galaxyTab has to be able to tell itself it is now F’d up. and the only way he can is by hardcoding a self test loop back. Just like the old AT&T days of a loop back self test on 2400 baud modems or bisyncronous communications DCE/DTE phone network equipment. You’d a thunk the microslofts or googles of today would know their a$$ from a hole in the ground HUH?
Joe Black said this on March 5, 2012 at 7:48 AM |
You don’t say exactly how to do that. Is this a temporary thing? Are you saying to enter static IP data and out 127.0.0.0 as the gateway and 127.0.0.1 as the ?
Dave said this on May 16, 2013 at 4:54 PM |
YOU ROCK THANK YOU. Set that IP adress to 127.0.0.0 and gateway to 127.0.0.1 and blam woke this damn thing right out of its dopey slumber

Hi Everyone. I had the same annoying problem for couple of days…I thought it s a problem with my phone (can be), but I managed to sort this problem out finally. Unfortunately, I did a factory reset as well, which was totally unnecessary…So I’ve got a Netgear router, and I was sure that something went wrong with the router, cause I had to reset it the other day. After this happened, I lost my connection through the phone…said “obtaining IP” all the time…So I decided to have a look on my router’s settings…Basically, you have to go to LAN settings and then you have to add an address reservation. You have to find your phone’s MAC address (this will show on your phone when you try to connect to the WIFI), then just give a device name, and choose an IP for your device on your computer, on the router’s site.Since my laptop has an IP ending with 02, my boyfriend’s phone is 04, I chose 03. After this just press apply, and then try to reconnect your phone. Mine is working this way. I’m so happy now. Finally… :) Good luck guys.

I had that same peoblem. Only my solution is to unplug the wifi and the routet and plug it again. In othet words reset them, it’s just that I dunno how. Wrll, everytin
me I do this I get connected instantly. Although I still have to wait for a few minutes in order to the engines like youtube and other internet related apps to recognize the connection though. But this is only temporary. Like for only a few hour then i’d have to unplug the internet again and plug it. For a minor problem it’s a major pain for me and I don’t want to keep on unpluving the internet just to connect it’s just not right.
kevz said this on April 18, 2012 at 8:38 AM |
I did a factory reset once and the problem was gone. However, after a while it came back, there’s probably triggering this bug. So, in your case, it may or may not occur again.

I’ve just changed my Wireless Security settings to “WPA mixed mode” and using ” WPA mixed mode automatically deactivates the encryption protocol and is “off” and used Authentication method as ” PSK”. this settings works on all my devices without any problem. Keeping “on” the Encryption protocol was an issue here for me. Hope it helps.

I’m guessing those who this didn’t work for aren’t setting up the static ip properly this page helped me. http://www.androidtablets.net/forum/le-pan-development/33709-setting-up-static-ip-fixed-ip-address-setting-no-dhcp-le-pans.html it’s router specific so your #s won’t be the same as this guy’s. Factory reset did nothing for me either. Nor did a firmware upgrade. I am helping a friend with a nextbook tablet. this issue is ridiculous, i love my iphone.

I had this problem with my Samsung G2, but it was only happening at work while trying to connect to a wireless SonicWALL. I finally fixed it by changing the EAPoL version setting in the SonicWALL wireless settings from version 2 to version 1. Apparently version 2 does not work with all devices. I would think that my SG2 would be fine with it, but it seems that’s not the case as I have now been connected for nearly 20 minutes with no disconnect/reconnect issues. If I’m wrong, I’ll repost.

Thought I’d check back in and let everyone know that my problem is resolved with the above change. No battery issues (Yesterday my battery was dead by 11:30am, it’s still almost full today at 2:15pm) and my wireless connection has remained connected all day.

Good news, Youtube fix works, but you don’t even have to enter any info when you tick Static IP address. Just leave blank, and try to connect. Phone will try a few times, then go back to advanced and switch Static IP off again. It then connected automatically when I switched Wifi on.

Here’s what I figured out. I have both an Android Phone and an Android Tablet. I have a wireless router connected directly to the ISP downstairs to which both phone and tablet connect to fine. Upstairs my signal was weak so I installed a CAT5 and plugged it into a port on the back of the router downstairs (hard wired) and added a 2nd wireless router upstairs.
So far so good. Now I connected phone AND tablet seamlessly to the internet through the 2nd router. (I couldn’t do it as a repeater because the security protocols weren’t 100% compatible). After less than a week I started having problems with both the phone and the tablet. I could only connect one at a time. Then after a while I couldn’t connect either one.
So I got another wireless router thinking the first one (upstairs in my room) was bad. I could still connect to the weak one downstairs. The new router did the same exact thing – only FASTER – it let me connect for an hour and then stopped. Nothing fixed it. I worked on it for 8 hours. FINALLY I disabled all security (no WEP, no WPA PSK, nothing!)! It worked. The both droids worked fine.
HOWEVER – my 3 PCs upstairs always could connect wirelessly through both the first router I installed and the second wireless router I installed. This tells me that it is the Droids that have the problem and that it wasn’t something specific to just one of them.
So – I then got a THIRD router/switch (not wireless) and placed it between the downstairs secure wireless network and my upstairs unsecured wireless network and make that one (the third one between the other two) very secure so anyone trying to screw around with the open network will have a bit of work to do and likely will never figure out what kind of a setup it is anyway so won’t even try. Outside of the phone and the tablet no other computers will be on that unsecured Wireless LAN. I disabled SSID broadcast and enabled MAC inclusion (not secure, but harder to gain access to) and set up my router to email me logs of any port scans and all LAN access, sites visited.
Meanwhile the Droids now work fine. It’s probably got something to do with the added security bits on the packet tails that the Droids can’t handle. Even with NAT and routing enabled etc (8 hours of changes – I tried EVERYTHING) no good. If you HAVE to get your droid working get a 2nd router and plug it in without any encryption – and GOOD LUCK!

I have Samsung Galaxy Mini (S5570) and I have TP-LINK WN822N Adapter, but I made it as router with Soft AP option. I have problem with connecting to my network with Obtaining IP address. I tried everything from using Static IP address to resetting phone, but nothing helped me. I note that when I left the smartphone more time to obtain IP address, it connects. But this is happening about 5 to 10 minutes, which makes me nervous. And when I disconnect the WiFi and connect it again, I have the same problem. Please tell me some solution. I forgot to insinuate that I tried to connect to my network from other smartphones and the connection was successful. Thank you very much.

Came across this. Had the same problems with multiple devices (Two HTC Evo 4Gs, an HTC Evo LTE, an Asus Transformer TF101 tablet and an old ViewSonic gTablet). Problem occured several times per week. Only way to “solve” it was to reset the router (a NetGear WNDR3400).
Finally, in a fit of “what the hell?” I installed DD-WRT open-source firmware to the router. Problem hasn’t recurred in over two months.
While this doesn’t let Android off the hook completely I think it’s pretty damning to NetGear’s claims of innocence…

Great discussion! I’ve had problems with my home wifi connection ever since I installed my wifi. I had a MyTouch 4G and recently bought a Samsung Galaxy S III, experiencing the same problems. But to be complete, I should mention that my home network is set up with static IP addresses and when I assigned a static IP address to my Galaxy, the problem was solved. I decided to use my old MyTouch for international travel and got it unlocked. When I assigned a static IP to that phone, once again the problem went away. Networks are notoriously quirky but they’re SOOOOO helpful if/when they work!
Thanks again to the OP.

Hi, I have a wildfire s and although Mr Mobinga’s workaround appears to work in that the phone says it is connected, but when I try and access the internet the phone says it is offline so I get ‘web page unavailable’. The router can see the phone is connecte though. Factory reset left the original problem (cannot obtain IP address) and did not fix the subsequent problem of the phone not realising it was online.

Hi, I also recently got a S4, had the same problem. Battled for days on end. Static option didnt work either for me – conneceted but didnt allow me to connect to internet.
I got it working last night (finally). I figured that it was the security type of my router – It was set to wpa2-psk – the phone didnt like this. I changed the router to WEP – and voila – working perfectly. Didnt connect first time – i switched wi-fi off on the phone, back on (dynamic IP) and works like a charm now.
Dan Smith said this on May 8, 2013 at 2:57 PM |
WEP is NOT recommended, it is much less secure than WPA. Google and or Samsung need to fix this annoying wi-fi issue. Some of us don’t have access to the router settings because we are at work and need to connect. I have an iPad sitting next to me, it connects EVERY time without problem to the same wi-fi. My new Samsung Galaxy S4 has trouble finding IP address for the same wi-fi. It works sometimes, other times not. Pathetic.

Don’t f%ck brain of yourself, the only way this issue handles is:
Go to
/data/misc/dhcp/
and delete all 3 / 4 files there.
Using all other methods, including listed above, you’ll get a half-dodgy-result.
Arguments:
1. Static ip is not a solution -> many times you should to connect to public hotspots with unknown addresses (finding out IP’s is a tricky way in most cases)
2. Allshare – not any tablet/phone has it, even if it is in a stock firmware (i remove is with titanium as i remove usually all unused items)
3. it is boring to manually enter the network sid each time you move between networks especially when you have a number around
Best wishes, Vlad.

Found a fix for this vexing problem. My symptoms were the same as yours i.e. setting it to static and then back to DHCP worked. However the best fix to this solution is set the time correctly in your router. pointing it to a time server (e.g. time.nist.gov) is the best option. Hope this works for anyone else who continues to face this problem

well Guys , the problem is not a soft one but in the hardware, samsung used a special chip to afford good usabillity and performance for its client they’ve used “bcm4330” chipset which is a product from Broadcom. the chip provide access to different wifi radio frequencies types like the 802.11n which is a new technology to connect transfer with a high speed.
well my phone now is no longer accepting this channel , but still accepts 802.11g chanel.

Your first option should be to change your wifi security from WPA2 to WPA. 2nd option to make static IP on device. The 2nd option works on Galaxy Note 3 but not on other devices. Strange that I did not have problems before but when I got another 2 devices (including Note3) started having IP issues. I thought it was the adsl modem/router giving problem but did many setting changes and did not help, also replaced another wifi router with range extender. This worked for a few days then had IP issues again. Read this post and decided to try the Static IP and WPA change.

I can’t believe this typo has existed for 5 years…you say his name is Mehul, then call him Muhal. Can you please just fix that error for me? Please?

Good Morning – after fighting over days an’ weeks for a solution in order to connect to our home wifi I modified the primary solution above and did the following:
1. Turn Wifi on (htc desire c with lollipop/cm12),
2. Add network (+ after tapping “forget network” for my previous connection to home wifi I had tried before here…
3. Inserted full name (small/Capital Letters must equal, of course) of home wifi network;
4. I Chose static ip (+after WPA2-pw),
5. then I inserted the proposed (greyed row of numbers) static ip address, here it was:192.168.1.126,
6. DNS 1: 8.8.8.8, DNS 2: 8.8.4.4
7. OK – connection finally established (withOUT the “Obtaining ip address”, but with an exclamation mark…: -/ – yet internet is working…! “:-)
